Using the scientific method, critical thinking skills, and data analysis, this course will examine the fundamental processes of the earth system, composed of an atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and exosphere, through time. The course will also explore interactions between these spheres, including critical analysis of scientific theories and emphasize Earth’s connections with humans.

Want to learn Python but don’t have coding experience? This course is a gentle introduction to Python programming for geoscientists. You will learn how to code, teach yourself how to use software packages, troubleshoot errors, navigate in terminal, and build confidence in your programming skills. You will develop technical skills that are in demand for a variety of scientific and industry disciplines.

Syllabus 

This 2-credit intensive field- and lab-based course introduces students to groundwater flow, karst hydrogeology, and surface water-groundwater interactions through classroom instruction, laboratory exercises, and multi-day field investigations. Students will collect, analyze, and synthesize hydrogeologic and hydrochemical data into professional technical reports.

Prerequisite: None, but background coursework in hydrogeology and hydrochemistry is recommended.

Live with a Mexican family in the beautiful in the modern city of Mérida in Yucatán, Mexico during Summer B. Develop conversational Spanish ability in Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced Spanish class (3 credits) at the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY). Earn UF credits in Tropical Ecology (3) and Humans & the Environment of the Yucatán Peninsula (2) and gain an understanding of the structure and function of the ecosystems on the Yucatán Peninsula. All instruction is in English, except Spanish classes.

Prerequisite: 2.5 GPA, Student is in good standing
