Research

Dr. Chelsea Comans is a paleoecologist and stable isotope geochemist who studies the ecology and evolution of ancient marine ecosystems. Her research focuses on the use of stable oxygen, nitrogen, and zinc isotopes in preserved vertebrate tooth enamel(oid) to reconstruct body temperatures, trophic positions and interactions, and environmental conditions in Late Cretaceous through Cenozoic marine ecosystems. Her research is particularly focused on understanding the origin and evolution of endothermy, gigantism, and trophic positions in sharks and how these ecological and physiological innovations interacted to influence evolutionary success through time.
