An exciting new class will be offered in the geology department for Fall 2015 – Near-Surface Geophysical Field Methods (GLY5786L/GLY4930). During the course students will learn the theory behind and will gain hands-on experience with electrical resistivity, ground penetrating radar, and multi-channel analysis of surface waves. Class will meet Fridays (periods 8-9) and will consist of a combination of lectures, literature discussions, and analysis of data collected on field trips. There will be three required field trips throughout the semester (9/19, 10/24, and 11/14) to Bat Cave where we will use the techniques to image the subterranean structure of the cave system. The course will culminate in group presentations of survey results and interpretations. Due to the logistics involved in this course, enrollment is limited.
Interested students should download the application form: SEG Field Class Application (PDF)
Completed applications should be submitted to Pam Haines (pghaines@ufl.edu) via email only by May 8 at 5PM.
This course was made possible by the SEG Foundation Field Camp Grants program and Gainesville-based Geohazards, Inc. The grant proposal, “Application of geophysical techniques to detect hydrologic conduit systems in North Central Florida”, was written by PhD students Kelly Deuerling, Stephanie James, Iliya Smithka, and Megan Torpey under the guidance of Dr. Ray Russo.
