“Deltas and Humans: A Long Relationship now Threatened by Global Change” by Professor Thomas S. Bianchi, holder of the Jon and Beverly Thompson Endowed Chair of Geological Sciences at the University of Florida, will be published in October by Oxford University Press. In this book, Bianchi discusses how the interaction of humans with the water and soils of river deltas has evolved over time in response to natural events and their use for farming and seafood gathering. Today deltas are challenged by the dramatic expansion of nearby human populations that has altered deltas’ natural sediments and water, resulting in human attempts to “tame” them. By providing information on the historical relationship between humans and deltas, Bianchi hopes to encourage appropriate coastal management plans to respond to the impending inundation of major cities from worldwide global changes.
