“Discovering the Deep: A Photographic Atlas of the Seafloor and Ocean Crust,” co-authored by University of Florida Geological Sciences Professor Michael R. Perfit, was recently honored with the 2016 PROSE Award for Earth Science from the Association of American Publishers, Inc. Presented on February 4, 2016 in Washington, DC, the PROSE Awards recognize the best in professional and scholarly publishing each year by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals and electronic content in 54 categories. Peer publishers, librarians and medical professionals have served as judges for these awards since 1976.
“Discovering the Deep,” which includes almost 500 never before seen photos of the seafloor, is published by Cambridge University Press. Perfit and co-authors Jeffrey A. Karson, Deborah S. Kelley, Daniel J. Fornari and Timothy M. Shank made numerous undersea trips in the submersible Alvin and with remotely operated vehicles to study volcanoes, hot vents and exotic life at the bottom of the oceans.
“It is an honor to have our scientific work recognized with this important award.” — Professor Michael R. Perfit
“It is an honor to have our scientific work recognized with this important award,” Perfit said. “All five authors have enjoyed sharing what we learned with our readers. This award should bring more attention to our book and will make people who are interested in oceanic exploration aware of it.” The book is available in both hard cover and Kindle versions.
