Dr. Matthew Smith’s primary job responsibilities are teaching and student advising. He still tries to remain active in geoscience research.  His primary research interests center on construction of the oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridges (MORs) and in particular the volcanic systems that occur along the MOR and on near-ridge seamounts.  Most recently he has been involved as part of a multidisciplinary group using geopophysical surveying, the submersible Alvin and the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry to study  near axis seamounts at 8° 20′ N latitude near the Siqueiros Fracture Zone.
