Ask a Grad Student

Carmi Thompson, MS Student:

Welcome fellow earth scientists! My name is Carmi, and I am a graduate student in the Geological Sciences with an additional appointment at the Florida Museum of Natural History (feel free to reach out with any/all paleontology or museum questions!). It is great to be a Florida Gator! Prior to starting my program, I worked for the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC and completed my undergraduate in Geology at the College of William and Mary.

In addition to working as a teaching assistant in the Geological Sciences, I do a lot of other work around the university through my role as the President of UF SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicana/os and Native Americans in Science). I would be more than happy to get folks connected with the different resources that UF has to offer! I also work nationally with the Paleontological Society and Geological Society of America and would be happy to share my experiences with those organizations.

Graduate life keeps me busy, but I also enjoy the arts and music scene around Gainesville and taking hikes in the many wonderful state parks that Florida has to offer. I have lived in Florida since 2017, so any questions that you have about graduate life, living in Gainesville (or Florida, broadly), or any other aspect of work and life at UF, I would be more than happy to address.

My research focuses on paleontology – specifically on fossil molluscan communities from the Cenozoic of Florida. To conduct this research, I’ve done fieldwork around the state of Florida, processed a ton of sediment, and spent hours at the microscope. This work has generally been self-funded, and I would be happy to share my experiences in grant-writing and fund-raising for field/lab work. Thanks for stopping by!
